According to statistics from the American Pet Products Association (APPA), last year dog owners in the United States spent about $60.28 billion on treats and pet food. And some of the foods humans eat can be deadly if you give them to your dog. Even as it is appealing to share your food with a furry friend, you should keep in mind that many foods are toxic to dogs. The following are some common foods that are harmful to your dogs’ health and your dog should not eat:
Tomato Leaves: Tomato leaves contain dehydroemetine and glycoalkaloids alpha-tomatine, which are deadly for dogs. A few symptoms of eating tomato leave include upset stomach, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and changes in behavior. Seizures and Tremors can as well occur if your puppy has consumed much tomato leaves.
Bread dough: raw bread made from live yeast can be dangerous if it is eaten by dogs. When the raw dough is ingested, the warm, moist environment of the stomach provides a perfect environment for the yeast to multiply, leading to an increase in the mass of dough in the stomach. The enlargement of the stomach can be severe enough to reduce blood flow to the stomach wall, leading to tissue death.
Chocolate - Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Chocolates contain theobromine and caffeine, which can be poisonous to your dog. Chocolates can cause vomiting, panting, diarrhea, and damage to your pets heart and the nervous system.
Alcohol: you should not allow your pet to taste any type of alcohol; much less consume it in large quantities. The major ingredients used in wine, beer, and other alcoholic beverages are poisonous and hazardous to dogs. Alcohol can cause abnormal acidity, poor breathing, and intoxication, lack of coordination and even coma or death of a dog.
Peaches: Dogs cannot experience any problem if they consume only flesh peach. But, pits of peaches are poisonous to dogs. They can cause your dog to experience dizziness, excessive drooling and dilated pupils.
Chives: This can cause anemia, hemolysis, or hemoglobinuria in your pet. Some symptoms of your dog consuming too many chives include weakness, pale mucous membranes, lethargy, and variable urine color (from red to brown).
Cooked bones: although raw bones are used for your dog's teeth, cooked bones can be hazardous for your puppy. Cooked bones are more brittle, meaning it is likely the bones might splinter causing internal injury to your pet.
Chewing gum: most gums contain sugar, called xylitol, which does not affect humans. However, it can cause high levels of insulin in dogs that reduce your dog blood sugar to a dangerous level, if your pet consumes a large quantity of chewing gum, it may damage the kidneys, liver or something worse.
Human snacks: some human snacks contain ingredients such as garlic powder, onions, raisins and chocolates that can be poisonous to dogs. Try to give your dog treats and snacks prepare just for them instead of sharing your own.
Macadamia nuts: These nuts also identified as Australian nut can cause depression, weakness, vomiting, tremors and high fever in dogs.
Onions: onions are hazardous to dogs. Avoid feeding your dog with onions (raw or cooked). If your dog eats a small number of onions every day for several days, it can gradually turn into anemia from weeks to months.
Corn cob: Your puppy can eat corn, but not the corn cob. Nearly all dogs cannot easily digest cob, which can lead to intestinal obstruction, serious and perhaps a fatal medical condition if not treated instantaneously.
Apple seeds: These seeds contain amygdalin, a type of cyanide. It can prevent the blood from transporting oxygen throughout the body. Keep your dog away from apple seeds.
Avocado: avocado pit, avocado fruit, and the plant are poisonous to dogs. Avocados destroy the lungs, heart, and other dogs’ tissues, as well as stomach upset, vomiting and pancreatitis.
These are just some of the foods that should not be eaten or taken by your dog. There are many foods that are toxic to our furry friends and I advise you to research and become truly knowledgeable about dog diet.
I think a lot of people are not aware of the risks of feeding these human foods to their pooches, and this can often be the case we believe that we are kind by giving our dog a bite of what we eat. Your dog is sitting and looking at your mouths and almost makes you feel guilty eating in front of him.
Yes, it appears to us that perhaps it is tough being of dog species and missing out what human enjoy eating. But, believe me, our dogs will live a healthy and pleasant life if we feed them with foods that are absolutely good for their well-being.
