Overview
Hay is an essential part of a rabbit’s diet that should be given in unlimited amounts. To be able to give it to your bunnies, you need a good hay holder or feeder that will ensure this essential bunny’s food remains clean, dry, and not tossed around, creating a mess in your house or hutch.
Whether you opt to buy one or make one at home, a good rack should be durable, sturdy, easy to install, access and clean. Also, it should create less mess. Going for a larger one is a good idea for people who have several bunnies.
Types of rabbit hay holders
Unless your rabbit is litter trained, you need to ensure you get a place to put hay or foliage for them to eat. We do not encourage a huge one since bunnies prefer fresh foliage daily and not the leftovers.
There are many types these racks or feeders that come in many designs which can be made of wood, plastic or metal (wire or metal bars). Should you go for wooden, plastic, or metallic?
Wooden hay racks
A wooden hay rabbit feeder can be mounted, free-standing, or hanged, some with a top opening. If you opt for a free-standing one, go for a study one to avoid it being tossed around.
Ensure the top is narrow to stop rabbits from jumping on to their top. Whereas some have wider tops where rabbits can sit on them, this is not a good idea since it can pee on them, thereby damaging the wood which should be untreated.
Finally, if your rabbits love chewing, it is not the best kind you should buy since they will continually damage it.
Metallic
They are inexpensive and can be fixed or hanged anywhere in your cage or hutches. Ensure the openings or space between bars or wires on the racks is narrow to stop rabbits from getting into it or getting hurt.
Plastic
Most designs made of plastics often have a front metallic grate. You need to ensure the plastics are safe (BPA free plastic and non-toxic) and they are hard to chew.
