Burping or belching refers to the act of expelling some gas from one’s stomach through the mouth especially if this gas accumulated in the stomach. This helps in reducing stomach distension particularly if you have swallowed much air.
Can rabbits belch or burp?
No. bunnies cannot burp, belch or eructate. In fact, their inability to eructate is one of the reasons why they often suffer from gas that can be very painful.
Also, medications such simethicone may not help deal with the problem of gas in the stomach since whereas it helps some animals expel gas from their stomach via burping, bunnies do not eructate.
Why can't rabbits belch
The reasons why this animal cannot eructate are the same ones as to why rabbits do not vomit. They revolve around their stomach anatomy and some neurological reasons.
Firstly, a bunny’s cardiac sphincter and the structure of their stomach makes burping and vomiting impossible. The cardia part of their stomach has thin walls. This animal is able to churn food with the help of its movement and movements in their large intestines.
Secondly, it could be due to the weak diaphragm that is not able to give the required force to make food or air go past the cardiac sphincter.
Finally, a possible reason is neurological, i.e., these pets do not have brain circuits to trigger nerve, mouth, shoulder and throats activities which help in vomiting or eructating.
Conclusion
Therefore, in case you notice your bunny’s belly distending and gurgling noise caused by gas, you do not expect these pets to belch. Try the various ways of dealing with gas in rabbits as this problem causes a lot of pain and make them not interested or able to eat.
