In human beings mangoes can help “decrease the risk of obesity and overall mortality, diabetes, and heart disease and promotes a healthy complexion and hair, increased energy, and overall lower weight,” notes Medical News Today.
This juicy stone fruit is obtained from a tropical flowering tree that belonging to the genus Mangifera has various nutrients including vitamin C, A, B6, K, healthy fibers, copper, potassium, magnesium, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, among others.
With all their benefit, one crucial question that every rabbit owner may want to know is whether mangoes are safe for bunnies or not.
Can I give my rabbit mangoes?
Yes. Rabbits can eat mangoes. They are not harmful or poisonous and one of the fruits that rabbits eat. Other safe fruits you can give your furry friends include melons, apricot, kiwi, pears, papaya, peach, apples, blackberries, grapes and so on.
Secondly, bunnies can eat ripe or unripe mangoes. Unripe ones tend to have to be hard and sour with a tangy flavor while ripe ones are often sweet, soft and mushy. You can give them both the see which one they prefer.
Besides the flavor and texture, they can be a source of additional nutrients we have mentioned, and they will make a great treat if you are trying to bond with your rabbits or training them such as to use their littering trays.
However, before replacing your rabbit’s usual diet with these fruits or giving them a lot of mangoes, you deserve to know that they should old be offered as occasional treats and they should not replace the usual diet which includes hay, high fiber pellets, and leafy greens.
Rabbit.org recommends “1 teaspoon per 2 lbs of body weight per day” of fruits one or twice in a week. This tells you how much mangoes or any other fruits your furry friend requires.
Being sweet and sugary, rabbits will undoubtedly love them since they, like human beings, they tend to be inclined to sweet and sugary foods. Unfortunately, being herbivores, they cannot eat a lot of sugary foods since their gut is not designed to digest to much sugar. This is because as Petconsider.com notes, they have “evolved to eat diets that are extremely high in fiber, yet low in sugar, they are not well-suited to caloric, sweet foods like fruit.”
Giving your bunny a lot of sugary foods and fruits including mangoes will cause bloating, gastrointestinal stasis, diarrhea, gas, and other health conditions. This is because the sugar will encourage bad gut bacteria to thrive affecting the normal digestion process.
Also, having less fiber will be difficult for cecum to empty effectively. Do not forget the fact that high calorific foods such as fruits may make your rabbit gain weight and become obese.
How to give your rabbit a mango
Begin by thoroughly washing fresh mangoes to remove any chemical remnants such as pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides. Getting some from an organic source is highly recommended since they will be free of these harmful chemicals. Also, they should be free of any molds or bruises.
Secondly, cut them into small dices to make eating easy. You can incorporate this tasty snack into their logic or puzzle toys if you want to help breakdown boredom as well as make you them more intelligent.
Can rabbits mango skin?
Yes, they can. As Lovebackyard.com notes, “you will not have to peel the mangoes because the rabbits will want to eat the peel too.”
However, you should not let them eat the seed. Also, avoid giving them dried ones since they tend to have higher sugar levels and it might be hard to digest.
